I care for a cat if I never had a pet? If so, how do I prepare?
I'm moving into an apartment and I would get a cat. My family never had pets growing up outside the fish. I love cats, other people, but I never cared for them directly or trained them (even pet). Is it hard to learn without help? If I can learn, can you refer me to good websites / books on the subject? Any other thoughts on the subject are appreciated.
I was lucky and a cat decided she wanted to live with me. She has been with me for just over a year. I never had a cat before, so everything was new. Initially, all you need is a tray of sand, water and food bowls and maybe a toy or two (do not go mad – I bought a lot of toys that never played with!). Mine sleeps in my bed or in the spare room, but in winter she loves the bed of the radiator. I love a cat, but my brother has just received three who need a lot of attention and four meals a day. A young adult cat is litter trained and need less attention, so if you work, you not have to worry about it on their own for a few hours each day. You will have a veterinary check at least once a year and injections. In addition to flea and worming treatment, although I'm not sure what is needed for an indoor cat (mine is for interior and exterior) My cat suits my routine and throughout the year, we come to know each other and worked how to wrap around the leg shortly! I bought a few books at the beginning, but to be honest, I found interesting, but as each cat has a different personality, no strict rules on how to care for them. They are fairly small independent things and mine seems to be very happy with being fed, a little playtime and snuggle in bed in the morning. It checks on me all day when I'm at home, but really needs little care. A new pet brought into the home will have a little time to settle, so do not worry if it takes a few weeks before you fully get used to each other. Try to find your local cat shelter for a pet. They have a selection of adults and possibly kittens. It will advise on care. You can then decide if you prefer a wee little thing, or something a little bigger. Now would not be possible without my cat. Good luck in their pursuit of their own. Been linked to the ASPCA website. If you are in the UK, then see the RSPCA website.
